What to wear for a dog photography session

It’s relatively easy to outfit your dog for a photoshoot- collar, check; harness, check. What you, the fur parent, should wear, can be vexing. It doesn’t have to be, if you follow a few simple tips. Here are my top 5 tips when it comes to outfit choices for outdoor dog photography.

  1. You do you, Boo. While I can advise you based on what I believe will photograph well whilst we are trekking around the woods, you know yourself, your comfort and your style, the best. And I know that ultimately you will look your best when you are feeling your best. So if bright colors and patterns make your fashion heart sing, please wear them.

  2. Think timeless and classic, with a casual feel. Jeans are always a win. Pair them with a solid color and textured top. Presto. You’ll look great snuggled up next to your fur baby.

  3. Adding layers will change the look of your photos. Add a jean jacket or a cardigan in a coordinating color. It gives you an option if you’re chilly. You know this - Minnesota weather changes by the hour. This layer will also tone down a patterned top, so if you prefer patterns in your tops (I do… it helps conceal my middle aged muffin top), this is a great strategy to show off your personality and look great in the photos.

  4. We will be walking on trails, in grassy fields and maybe on the beach. Remember this when you pick your shoes. I suggest comfort over style on this one - I’ve long since banned high heels from my wardrobe. Your feet will likely not be prominent in the images. Again - you do you, Boo.

  5. About accessories, hair and makeup: less is more. You are beautiful just as you are. I promise.
