Three tips for sessions with older pets

As our pets age, their time with us becomes more precious than ever. Capturing memories with senior pets through photography is a wonderful way to celebrate their lives and cherish their legacy. As a pet photographer, I have had the privilege of working with many senior pets and their owners, and I have witnessed firsthand the joy and gratitude that comes from capturing these special moments.

  • When photographing senior pets, it is important to take their age and physical limitations into consideration. They may not be as mobile as they once were, and may need breaks or rest periods during the photo session. If we are photographing outside, I have a curated list of Minneapolis St Paul locations that have flat, easy to navigate trails. Most photo locations are close to the parking lot. No matter the location, I create a calm and comfortable environment for your pet, and always work at their pace.

  • One of the most rewarding aspects of photographing senior pets is capturing their personalities and unique quirks. Senior pets have a lifetime of memories and experiences that shape who they are, and it is important to capture these traits in their photos. Whether it be a goofy expression or a wagging tail, these little moments can tell a powerful story about the bond between pet and their people. It’s why I always encourage humans to be in at least some of the images. These moments make wonderful albums.

  • Finally, photographing senior pets provides a way to honor their legacy and preserve their memory for years to come. These photos can be cherished and shared with family and friends, and even passed down to future generations. They serve as a reminder of the love and joy that pets bring into our lives, and the special bond we share with them.

As a pet photographer, it is an honor to capture these special moments and create lasting memories for pet parents. If your pet has more yesterdays than tomorrows, consider scheduling a pet photography session. It’s easy to put off, but there will come a day (sooner than you’d like) when your pet will not be as healthy as they are today. Capturing their personality is way more fun when they are full of vitality.
