6 tips to find the right professional pet photographer

Are you searching for a skilled and experienced pet photographer in the Twin Cities?

Pet photography has become increasingly popular in recent years, as people seek to capture memories of their furry friends. Whether you're looking for a cat photographer or a dog photographer, there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the right one.

As a professional pet photographer in Minneapolis, I hear many concerns from my clients. By far the most common belief is that pet photography is only for well trained models.  This is a myth!  I work with “normal” pets who are typically marginally trained.

Any pet can be successful in their professional photo session.  I am so confident I guarantee it.  I’ll refund your session fee if you aren’t satisfied with your images.

  1. First and foremost, experience is key. You want a pet photographer who has worked with animals before and knows how to capture their unique personalities. Look for a photographer with a portfolio that showcases a range of styles and techniques. This will give you an idea of what to expect from your own photo session.

  2. Location is also an important factor to consider. You want a pet photographer who is familiar with the Twin Cities and knows the best locations for a photo shoot. Whether you're looking for an urban or natural setting, your photographer should be able to recommend a spot that will compliment your own décor and also keep your pet safe and comfortable.  After all, the goal is amazing portraits that will live on your walls for years to come.

  3. Timing and scheduling are other important factors to consider. You want to schedule the photo shoot at a time that works well for you and your pet. Your photographer should be able to work with your schedule and suggest a time of day that will provide the best lighting for your photos. Sunrise and sunset are ideal times for photography- that’s when the light is the best.  Sunset in the summer in Minnesota can be busy, so it’s imperative that your photographer knows some quieter areas of a park that will also match your décor preferences.

  4. Communication is key when working with a pet photographer. You want to make sure that you're on the same page when it comes to your vision and expectations for the photo shoot. Your photographer should be able to listen to your ideas and make suggestions based on their experience.  You should always know what comes next in the process.

  5. Your photographer should help you prepare for your session, especially when it comes to what to bring and what to wear.  Grooming schedules are an important consideration, as are the age of the pets.

  6. After the photo shoot, you can expect your pet photographer to edit the photos and deliver the final product to you in a timely manner.  Your pet photographer should ask you about your décor, help you choose the right sized artwork for your space, and guide you on finishes and color choices.  He or she should also be able to show you how the finished product will look in your home before you order it.  Many photographers deliver the final wall art and albums to your home or office.

When searching for a pet photographer in the Twin Cities, be sure to consider experience, location, props and accessories, timing and scheduling, and communication. Here in Minnesota we also have to consider the weather.  Seasonality can make a big difference in the look of your photos.  With the right photographer, you can look forward to treasured artwork that capture your pet's unique personality and style.
