Top 5 Minneapolis St Paul Spring Hikes with your Dog

Finally, the snow is melting and the temperatures are above freezing.

That means it’s time to find some spring waterfalls. And if you have a furry canine to share the adventure your life will be complete. As a dog and cat pet photographer I am always on the hunt for beautiful locations in the Minneapolis St Paul area. Here are some of my favorites.

Don’t forget the sunscreen and water for you and your dog. Or cat, if they get to leave house arrest.

Minnehaha Falls. An oasis right in the city. This time of year the waterfall can be impressive. Sometimes the park doesn’t open the stairs to the falls until later in the season, so you might not be able to get close. No matter, it’s still beautiful.

Hidden Falls Regional Park. Another little gem in the heart of the city. My secret hint to find the falls: follow Mississippi River Blvd farther north of the park entrances. There's a small parking area with a statue from Egypt. Park. Walk east toward Mississippi River Blvd. Just before it turns south, there's a path with a waterfall sign on your right. Walk down the steps. You're there!

Spring Greens

Nothing better than warm sunshine and green grass.

Shadow Falls. This is small, quiet and out of the way. Also popular with the local students. You might not want to hike to the falls - there is no official trail - but the scenery is beautiful and peaceful.

Cedars Waterfall. If you are bored with your own neighborhood, adopt another one I recommend the mini human made waterfalls at Cedars of Edina. This is located on Gallagher drive. You can walk along the street for nice walk or go for short run and this street connect to state regional trail. There isn’t a dedicated parking here so you can drive by and see it.

Vermillion Falls. This is in Hastings, which is a bit of a drive from Minneapolis. But well worth it- it’s one of my favorite river towns. Pack a lunch for you and your dog, you can enjoy it from the picnic tables or the parking lot if it’s chilly. The brick building behind the falls adds to the charm. Walk along the river and enjoy the slower pace. There’s even a dog park in town!
