The Power of Community

Last week my talented photo assistant Marlena and I had the pleasure of donating our time to Pet Haven, Minnesota’s oldest foster based animal rescue. The goal was simple yet profound: to capture the unique personalities adoptable animals to help them find their forever homes.

We know that good photos of adoptable animals is a big factor in finding their forever homes, and we were more than happy to help. We loved welcoming to our Hopkins studio the generous foster families who are currently caring for these special animals.

Most of all, we loved getting to know the pets themselves. Each of them had a unique story to tell, filled with resilience and hope. Our hearts melted when a litter of five (!!) kittens joined us. So. Much. Fun! One of them was playing with my shoelace while I photographed their sibling.

Max was a goofy guy who appreciated our affection as much as we enjoyed giving it. He will make an awesome family dog. We can picture him snuggled on the sofa during family movie night, and playing in the park with kids or other dogs. Like all of the adoptable animals, Max deserves a loving, safe, permanent home.

Then there was Nyla, a young tortoise cat. Her eyes were the greenest of green, and her inquisitive, playful personality was so fun to photograph.

Having worked with Pet Haven for awhile now, I know first hand the selfless work of the volunteers and staff. They care deeply about the animals and people they serve, and I am always awestruck by the power of a group of dedicated people working toward a common goal. I am honored to play a small role in this community.

As I edited the photographs after the session, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for these brave foster families and their equally brave temporary pets. These pets all have their own personalities, and I hope I was able to do them justice.
