Travel Tips for your Dog
We are a week away from Thanksgiving!
If your dog is planning to join you on your Turkey Day trip to friends or family, here are some car travel tips to keep in mind.
As always, expect your dog to act like the canine they were created to be. This means short attention spans and frequent stops for bathroom and play times.
Whether or not the destination is familiar to your dog, give them time to sniff and inspect when you arrive. If they are not keen on children or chaos, protect them. If they need a quiet corner, provide it. Your dog needs you to provide extra care in all of the holiday exuberance.
The star of Thanksgiving - the food- can be a minefield for your dog. Not all holiday food is safe for dogs. For a list of common holiday foods that are OK and dangerous for your dog, check out this article from Rover.
Never leave your dog alone in the car. it’s too cold, and also potentially dangerous. If your dog is anxious like mine, it is also distressing. Consider a travel companion to keep your dog company in the back seat.
A crate or carrier is the safest place for your dog while you are traveling. At the least keep them in the back seat.
Above all, enjoy your dog’s company and have fun!
