How to keep your pet safe on July 4
Ahhh…summer. BBQ, pool parties and fireworks.
While you have the time of your life attending post Pride and solstice soiree’s, your pet is likely not as keen. Some are downright terrified. As a professional dog and cat photographer, I often hear horror stories about scared and lost pets.
Did you know that animal control services report a 30% increase in lost pets between July 4th and 6th? And sadly, only 14% of them are reunited with their owners. The main reason? Fear. The sound and sight of fireworks cause a classic flee response, making pets run away in an effort to stop their terror.
With a few simple preparation steps, you can ensure your beloved pet is safe and comfortable.
If you are leaving home on July 4, be sure your pet cannot escape the confines of their cozy hangout in your house. Close the windows, and lower the blinds while your at it, to decrease the flashing bright lights from fireworks. Give them plenty of love and exercise before you leave. Make sure they have access to their coziest place - kennel, bed, couch, or cat tower. If you are an introvert like this dog photographer, consider skipping the crowds and watching the festivities from your couch. Perhaps you and your pet will be happier. I know I will.
If you do decide to venture out and leave your dog at home, do all the anxiety things: anti anxiety meds, thundershirt. Chewing is a known calming activity for dogs, so give them a chewy or Kong to chew on and help distract them.
If you decide to venture out AND take your dog with you, do all the anxiety things above. And also be sure your dog is leashed and near you. Is your microchip data up to date? Now’s a good time to check in case your beer hand drops the leash.
With just a few minutes of preparation, you can keep yourself and your pet comfortable this 4th of July.
Happy Independence Day!
