Halloween Safety Tips for your Dog
I love the fall, and I love celebrating coziness, including Halloween. But my pup Snickers does not share my enthusiasm for the exuberant trick or treaters who ring our bell. and the chocolate bars that tempt me from the kitchen.
She is terrified of their squeals, screams and general merry making. Not to mention the costumes that flap around. If I didn't contain her, she'd run out the front door in a panic.
Dogs lack the understanding that humans do, and may not enjoy the holiday. They may be downright miserable.
And please, for the love of all things canine, please respect your dog if you are temped to dress them up like a child. If you do dress them up, take care to observe their behavior. It's up to you to keep them comfortable. Are they hot or cold? Especially here in Minnesota, the weather can change quickly. Can they move and groom and do regular dog things like bark and breathe? Do they look miserable? Remember they are dogs, not humans.
You probably know to keep them away from chocolate (more for you!). Xylitol is a common sweetener and also toxic to dogs. Watch for wrappers, strings and other items that may fall on the ground or floor in the excitement of the evening, especially electrical wires from decorations and lit candles.
Take extra care to pay attention to your dog this Halloween, so everyone can enjoy the celebration.
Happy Halloween!
